THE Batch Movie ScreenCap Creator… Create ScreenCaps of
– any number of movies,
– located anywhere on your computer,
– manually or with a time-scheduler,
– with a free to choose number of caps,
– the ability to ignore already processed files,
– a customizable design
– and most important, it allows you to do it in Batch Mode!
AMT is THE Batch Movie ScreenCap Creator!
The AMT – Auto-Movie-Thumbnailer is an automation GUI to batch create ScreenCaps, Thumbnail Index Pictures, Preview Pictures or Contact Sheets for any given number of movies. It supports many different input (AVI, MPG, Quicktime, Real-Media, Windows-Media,….) formats, in fact every input format that is supported by MPlayer.
Additionally AMT offers you a huge number of possibilities to customize the design and layout of the ScreenCaps.
AMT works by remotely controlling the MPlayer, some applications of the ImageMagick Suite and a MediaInfo plugin to perform the screenshoting and Picture creation.
Known Problems
Short movies might not have enough key-frames (depending on format) for multiple screenshots. E.g. if you want to have 20 screenshots per movie, but the movie only has 10 Key-frames, will get duplicate screenshots. That’s because the seek function of MPlayer is controlled by simple math. 20 screenshots means start at 2.5%, next shot 7.5%, 12.5%… if now too few key-frames are defined in the movie (during creation process), 7.5% and 12.5% might point to the same key-frame, if for example the movie has a key-frame at 5% and the next at 15%. MPlayer is only capable of seeking key-frames for certain formats.

I love your AMT software, it works great but is there anyway to turn off the date at the bottom left of the image?
It would be great having that option under Layout. Keep up the good work!
Hi Tjiya,
glad you like AMT :)! I’ll add an option to turn off the date, but the footer will still contain the “Picture created with AMT”… a little self-promotion should be allowed :)…
Regards
Karsten
Thank you for spending your time on this excellent software.
Great software. But I found when I close my laptop, all the caps failed, and when I used RDP, as long as I keeped the RDP session alive, the caps would succeed, otherwise it must be failed. Then I changed MPlayer Arguments from “-vo direct3d(default)” to “-vo directx:noaccel(aero disabled)” everything worked fine.
Hi Ben,
thanks for reporting this. I’ve already stumbled over it, seems to happen on Win8+ (which I’ve recently installed myself). Thus in the upcoming v5 the default video driver is going to be “-vo directx” for XP and Win8+ and “-vo direct3d” for Win-Vista and Win7 (directx does not work with Aero enabled / disables Aero).
Best Regards
I just discovered AMT – while it has a complex set of options that I can’t really make use of, it works fine as long as I choose not-too-many caps per video (i.e. on a longer video, 100 caps always fails, but 40 will work).
My only suggestion (other than a simpler GUI – or a dual GUI with basic/advanced options) – would be to choose to set the TIMING of the caps – every 30 seconds, for example. I’d really prefer to cap by time than dividing the whole video by X caps.
I know software for this exists out there, but I can’t find it…
Meantime, this is the best app I’ve found so far!
Hi David,
what does the log say on failure? Just created a 200 shot index without a problem. Maybe the input video just does not have enough key-frames? Some more details would be great.
Regarding the timing, a shot every x seconds is taken to the list for the next release. However there is already a timing option: “Layout” > “Patterns” > “Movie length takes…”.
Regarding the GUI, nope, won’t do that. Default settings are fine for me, and if someone wants to customize the screencaps he’ll just have to take the burden and do some try&error testing.
Regards
As discussed via email, the issue with the more than 100 caps was related to the respective movie not having enough key-frames, in general this is not an issue and works fine. Thanks for the feedback!
Regards
Greetings, first time user on v4.0.
So far I’m not having any luck, I get mplayer timeouts regardless of what video file or format I try to use with it.
Win7 X64 Ultimate

Hi Amos,
I’ve send you an email with some debugging instructions I’ve asked you to carry out. I happily would track down this bug and fix it. If anyone else encounters a problem, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Regards
Hi Amos,
as discussed via email, you have found out that there seems to be a hard-coded limit of 16 threads for MPlayer. I’ve already added a default limit of 4 threads for the next release (can be manually overridden). For the time being, if AMT does not work, please check if you have too many threads allocated (“Settings” > “MPlayer Arguments” > set “-lavdopts threads=4”, should be enough).
Thanks again for helping to debug AMT!
Regards
Karsten
I have been using AMT for 6 months on my Windows XP (32 bit)machine with no problems.
I have just upgraded the OS to Windows 7 (32 bit) and reloaded AMT.
Now it does not work – the calls to mplayer timeout.
Any suggestions?
Hi ScaNZ,
as discussed via email the reason seems to be a wrong -vo / video out driver set as default. Use “directx” for XP and “direct3d” for Vista and above. Thanks for pointing this out! Will fix it in the soon to be released v4.
Regards
Karsten
The program works perfectly under 64 bit Windows 8. I just wanted yo let you & people know this. Thanks.
Hi KaFu,
I think I found a bug (again??).
I use AMT with the option suffix.
If I capture the same movie two times, the first time the suffix is correct, but the second time it is the file extension with a number.
E.g. from a movie called Film.mkv the first capture gives Film-screens.jpg and the second is Film.mkv_1.jpg.
Thanks
Another thing would be a nice option, if I may ask, is to have the thumbnail pattern depends to the time of the movie instead of size. I have short HD movies with a bigger size then normal movies. Now it gives the same pattern but with a lot of the same thumbs in HD.
Hi Ernst,
thanks for reporting the bug (again 🙂 ). I’ll send you a link to the AMT v3-Beta to retest, should be fixed by now. Additionally thanks for the feature request, seems like a really good suggestion and I’ll see to it, that this makes it into the v3-Final release.
Best Regards
Hi !!!
Wonderful program! Is it possible to select only 1 video file in a directory?
Thanks!
Angie
Hi Angie,
glad you like it :). Yes, on the “Input” tab there is a button called “Create ScreenCap from a single Movie”, this allows you to process just the one file selected.
Best Regards
Karsten
The “maximum execution time per movie” option doesn’t seem to work. By default, it’s 360, and when I try to process a long file it aborts after 360 secons and puts “0: Error – Maximum processing runtime per Movie of 360 seconds has been exceded. Skipping to next file…” in the logfile. But if I change the option from 360 to 1800, it still aborts after 360 seconds with that same message. So the option doesn’t do anything.
Hi,
thanks for the feedback. I looked it up and there is a check preventing the value to be larger than 1000. In the next release I’ll increase the limit to 9999, should be enough even for the largest movie :).
Regards
Fantastic program! It has been a blessing in organizing my movies and clips.
I’ve been able to figure out almost everything I need to do with it, but I don’t understand how to choose a “Thumbnail Pattern” (if that is a choice). What I was hoping to get was to generate thumbnails with, say, 12 frames (3 columns in 4 rows. This output would be to just remind me what each movie was, if that makes sense.
Thanks for AMT.
Hi Eric
AMT needs “Keyframes” to take a screenshot, and in my experience the number of keyframes in a movie file correlates to it’s size, thus the “Thumbnail Patterns”. AMT gets the size of the movie file and compares it to the table to see how many screenshots to take. If your want to have a fixed value of 3 cols in 4 rows, delete all patterns except the “else” one (click the # number to select) as set the number to 12 and the row to 4, now all screencaps will have that dimension.
Regards
That would be awesome
Is there a way to save the directories selected and start with windows. I can use command line but I don’t see a way to specify multiple input directories.
And OBTW, most excellent software, thank you very much!!
Hi Ted,
glad you like AMT :). No, currently only a single directory is supported as a command line parameter, I’ll take a look on how to implement multiple directories as input. But on reading your post I had an idea for another commandline switch, with the upcoming version 2.1 “AMT.exe RunOnStart” will start AMT and immediately begin to process the directories saved in the last run.
Best Regards
Thank you for the superb software. It does everything it should do, and in a easy way.
But I’ve one question. What to do if I want to use the sufix? Whatever I fill in nothing is attached to the filename. The prefix is working fine.
Best software so far for creating movie thumbnails. But unfortunately it has a big bug: Deinstallation of AMT effects that EVERYTHING else that’s also stored in the same installation folder as AMT will blindly also be deleted (not depending on if it belongs to AMT or not). I have had AMT installed to “D:\programs” of an external USB HDD which included about 50 GB of different other important data. When I deinstalled AMT yesterday I had to find out that the deinstallation program of AMT deleted the entire about 50 GB of important data also stored in the subfolder “programs” within about a minute, too – and it was even NOT possible to stop the deinstallation before it has finished. I’m glad that the about 50 GB of data was “only” a backup so that everything was not really lost forever in my case. But nevertheless please solve this problem as soon as possible. It’s really not good to let a software decide that everything else stored in the same folder as AMT is also not useful anymore after one has decided to deinstall AMT.
Yes, you are right, thanks for reporting. I never anticipated someone to install AMT into an existing directory, even less a root directory. Glad to hear you’ve had a backup of the data. Well I assume it is quite a common behavior for an uninstaller to delete the install directory, I guess this will happen with lots of other installers too, but I’ll fix this asap.
Regards
Uploaded v2.0 which fixes the uninstaller issue.
Best Regards
What a fantastic program, so simple and so really automatic batch operation!
But only one problem I’ve just encountered. When it is dealing with files with unicode filenames, e.g. Japanese character, while I am not using Japanese windows, it cannot write the thumbnail file at the final stage.
From the log, everything is fine until writing the final file, the filename becomes unreadble and unwritable.
Any work around? Thanks for such a great tool!
Hi Victor,
glad you like it :). Now, that’s strange, Japanese characters in movie filenames work fine for me (well, at least the creation part, on the created screencap I still get ????? for the filename, that’s related to ImageMagicks filename handling, still investigating on that). I’ll send you a link to the most recent Beta version, rename the original AMT.exe to AMT_Old.exe and put the new one in place and give it a try. Let me know if that solves your problem.
Regards
Karsten
Tried to build some thumb on 1280*720 wmv file.
MPlayer seems to have some error because log was full of seeking option and a .jpg was error.
So i dragdroped the wmv file directly to AMT-MPlayer.exe, it build font cache scanning all my windows font dir, and start play my video.
After close mplayer i start ATM and all thumb was ok. Not first time happed to me.
Hope to be useful
Hi Roy,
thanks for posting that tip. Happens to me too from time to time, especially when I update the underlying MPlayer build, or when you have more than one instance of the MPlayer installed (e.g. the SMPlayer as your video player). AMT calls the mplayer with the “nofontconfig” flag, but that does not seem to be enough *dooh*. Maybe it’s sufficient the delete (rename) the subdirectories “fonts” and “mplayer”, but I’m not satisfied by my testing yet. Hope to have this fixed for the next release.
Regards
Just a fair warning.
The -sub-fuzziness option must be used only for external subtitles. So we have two cases:
1. Internal subtitles. Use the options mentioned, but discard -sub-fuzziness. The rest of them will capture the first subtitle in the stream or the one mentioned in -slang.
2. External subtitle. Use -sub-fuzzines 2 for capturing it, but it will override any internal one (also will discard -slang) and will load the first subtile (sorted by name) in the folder. So every video must be placed in its own folder and the preferred subtitle must be named first (use 1 or 0 at the beginning, for instance).
Sadly, the ideal situation, -sub-fuzziness 1 -slang xx(loading subtitles with video’s name and language code), has no effect. Tried it with every possible build of mplayer, maybe it’s a bug or something else in between.
But since this is not a requested feature, it is an acceptable workaround for those interested.
Now for the clips. If it is in any help for your development, I will post some links. But please note that I don’t expect any solution, since they are short and beyond the specs of normal-use+normal-user. It is merely for your testing.
High-bitrate clips.

6th clip, Avatar60p shows repeated frames.
http://wp.me/PrgSo-gQ
ALmost all test clips show repeated frames, although I can play them just fine in MPC-HC. Is it just their shortness that should be blamed for that? And I know you already answered it in the known problems, so this is only for extreme testing.
Sorry for the inconvenience! Much obliged for this awesome software.
Me again. After some testing I have found the right settings.
-sub-fuzziness 2 (loads any subtitle in the current folder)
-ass -vf ass,screenshot,expand=osd=1 (for capturing the subtitle in the screenshot)
-slang xxx,xx,yyy,yy (for loading a specific subtitle using its name in two/three letters code)
-ass-font-scale x (for increasing the size of subtitle, default is too small. Mine was 2). It can be used also -subfont-text-scale x (mine was 5).
-ass-color rrggbbaa (for color, default was yellow; mine was ffffff00).
Give it a shot and if it is useful, maybe you can add it to the FAQ section.
Now some questions. I have some high-bitrate small files (60fps or 2160p or even High@L5.1) and also interlaced ones that generates repeated thumbnails. Is there a way to avoid this or to crop some of them? They do not run fluidly on my computer with any player, so maybe they overcharge mplayer, even with the -framedrop command. Is there any workaround?
Thanks, nice additions :), I’ll definitely add this to the ReadMe File. I also read some more and found this useful switch:
-sub-paths sub,subs,subtitles
which expands the path to search for subtitles to accordingly named sub-directories.
About the HQ movie files, sorry, I don’t have experience with them. Maybe if you increase the players priority on the “Setting” tab, or change the used Video Driver? Also you might give the SMPlayer or doom9 forum a shot, the limiting factor is clearly the MPlayer and not AMT.
Best Regards
Is it any option available to capture with subtitles? Not really planning on using it, but it would be interesting. Deleting -noautosub has no effect.
Thanks for the great work!
P.S. This is not a request, merely a question.
Currently there is no such option. I tried adding this string “-vobsub C:/_USENE~2/HD/GANGSO~1/Subs/D-GONY~2” to the optional MPlayer arguments on the “Settings” tab (to test for a specific movie). The subtitles were displayed in the preview pane, but sadly they were not captured by the screenshot video filter on the output pictures. So this workaround sadly does not seem to work. It seems a little more complex to implement this feature, and I guess I will not follow-up on this one, sorry.
Another source for MPlayer builds is the SMPlayer GUI project, though for the time being I stick to the builds provided by SubJunk (link some post below).

Great program! But I do have a tiny request/problem.
Is it possible or will it be possible to change the location of the temp-directory? Default it writes everything in the user profile directory on the c-drive. I would like to be able to set it to use a drive with a bit more storage space.
Hi,
glad you like it :). No, currently it is not possible to change the directory for the temporary files. I’ll take it to the list for the next release.

i had some problem “seek did not respond in…” but solved.
report here what i did because can be useful to someone.
downloaded p4 version from here: http://oss.netfarm.it/mplayer-win32.php
renamed as AMT-mplayer
downloaded codec pack from here: http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/dload.html and unpacked into codecs folder
works like a charm now.
Hi RoyDJ,
thanks for your comment! Indeed I’ve noticed problems with AMT from time to time too. This reason is that it purely relies on the functionality of the MPlayer for playing the media files and creating the screenshots. As the development of the MPlayer is an ongoing project, they even manage to release builds which don’t play files working fine with an older release. So the only option is to hope for a good release and if it doesn’t play the files as intended to try another build just the way you’ve perfectly described it. The v1.5 release contains a new MPlayer build, give it a try too and let me know if you run into any bugs.
Best Regards
Edit:
Another source for fresh MPlayer builds is
http://www.spirton.com/mplayer-mencoder-subjunk-build/
all I get, with every single image, is a black box with “Error” in the lower-left. Every movie plays fine on its own; is this a codec problem or something else?
Please see my next comment and give AMT v1.5 a try…

Hi,
Thank you for this great software! It’s works fine!
I’m a mediaportal user and I was searching a replacement of “movie thumbnailer” integrated into mediaportal because “movie thumbnailer crashes often!
I need a soft that could be used in batch mode to automatize the thumbnails creation for my tv recordings (*.ts file) to display the thumbnails into the mediaportal GUI when I browse tv recordings.
Your software seems to works fine with my *.ts file but I’ve got questions :
– I’ve configured the settings to get only 1 image because it more easy to see into mediaportal GUI. Is it possible to get the image without the border around the image and the shadow?
– Is it also possible to get the image without the amt.cc logo?
Thank you very much!
Best regards,
Tibo
Hi Tibo,
glad you like AMT :).
> Is it possible to get the image without the border around the image and the shadow?
Go to the “Layout” tab and set “Thumbnail Padding” to 0 x 0. Additionally you might want to uncheck the “Add Info Header” checkbox.
> Is it also possible to get the image without the amt.cc logo?
In v1.4 the above solution is as far as you can get. I’ll think about an option to remove the logo, but a little selfish advertisement should be allowed for free software :)…

Hai,
sometimes, the batch don’t func…. in the log I see a message that the mplayer not reacts.
Thank you for this program!
Kindly regards,
Herjan
Hi Herjan,
thanks for the feedback. As far as I can see it’s a problem in the MPlayer itself. I’ve updated the MPlayer version and added an activity monitoring to v1.3, please check it out and let me know if you encounter other problems.

Is it possible to use AMT without switching back to the Windows Basic color scheme on Windows 7. Aero is not working.
Thanks for your affords!
Hi Arne,
sorry, no. The underlying MPlayer instance needs Areo to be turned off to work properly. As soon as the MPlayer dev crew delivers a version working with Aero I’ll also update AMT.
Best Regards
Hello,
I find your program very useful, one question about the layout: is it possible, to get the thumbnails without any borders between them and without the information part on top of the thumbnail-summary. Where could i modify this?
Thanks for your answer and best regards
Wolfgang Daub
Hello Wolfgang,
glad you like AMT :). Both options you mention above are currently not customizable. I’ve added them to the ToDo list and will implement them into the upcoming version 1.3.
Best Regards
Karsten
I want to use your program, it seems very good. However it does not work on my PC (Windows 7 64-bit).
Hi Wilfrid,
I’m running it myself on Win7-64bit without problems. Do you have an Intel or AMD CPU? If you’ve got an AMD CPU take a look at the instructions on “About” tab, section “MPlayer”. The default MPlayer that comes with AMT is a custom Intel build an needs to be replaced for AMD CPUs. If the problem persists, drop another comment with you Email (will not be published) so we can solve this 1:1.

AVG has detected a Virus
Virus Identified Packed.AutoIt AMT.exe
Hello John,
first thanks for the report. AMT is coded using the AutoIt scripting language. As this language is also used for malicious coding, some AV programs from time to time just flag all AutoIt code as potentially harmful. If you downloaded the installer package from my website I can assure you that I did not implement any harmful code in it… would be too stupid while publishing it under my true name, wouldn’t it?
Here’s a report from Virustotal.com on the v1.2 AMT.exe.
6/ 41 (14.6%) AVs report an alarm, meaning also 35/ 41 do not consider the file harmful.

v1.2 fixes the UAC and DEP issues on Vista+ systems. Additionally there are some new functionalities (add custom logo or comment, create screencap.exe.jpg or screencap.jpg) and other minor improvements… enjoy :)…
Hi, I wanted to try it on Windows Server 2008 Windows Server 2008 does not work, but I think I got this problem…
[Error Message cut]
I do not have any problems in xp sp3 message I wrote a computer program that is working perfectly thanks to a very good program that saved us angaryasından mediaplayer
Thanks for the feedback! In the last couple of weeks I identified two big problems with AMT on Vista+ OS (I guess that counts for Server 2008 too). First it triggers UAC and asks for Admin rights (no need for that, I fixed it by adjusting the executable’s manifest) and second there is an issue when the Microsoft DEP (Data Execution Prevention) feature is activated. For sorting lists I execute some machine-code in memory and DEP makes AMT crash on that one. Its also already fixed, now I just need to update the documentation and repack the installer, expect that to happen in the next couple of days :)…
As I said, I love it…
…but, I’ve a small question:
how can I reduce the size of the created thumbnails ?
On the Settings #2 tab there is the option “Resize Thumbnails” to set the output dimension of the single screenshots. The amount of shots and the matrix layout of the output is defined in the table “Thumbnail Patterns” depending on the input filesize in the format “From filesize to filesize (in MB) create x shots and arrange them in y rows”.
Hi this looks good, but just so you know, McAfee says that it has a variant of the Artemis! Trojan in your .exe and will not let the user install the software. you may want to contact them to get that cleared out if you want this to be widely distributed.
Cheers
Hi Christian,
thanks for the nice feedback. The program is coded using the AutoIt scripting language. Sadly some sluggish AV companies regard this scripting language as a whole malicious (without reason). AU3 pops in and out of the result lists from time to time, can’t do a thing about it. Can’t of course guarantee for mirror downloads, but at least the original download provided here does not contain malicious code (hey, I publish it with my true name :)). Check out the testing results of http://www.virustotal.com.
Regards, Karsten
Briliant.
Thanks a lot 4 this…
Just cannot get this to work. It won’t select any of the thumbnail patterns, it always uses the 60 thumbnail one. Tried creating a new pattern but it doesn’t save the numbers I put in. Seems to work for other people, but not me. Don’t know if it’s a Win7 64-bit issue or what.
I’m running it on Win7-64bit myself, but I’ve done some updates (my current private build is v1.0.8.6). One thing was the Aero effect being disabled and re-enabled again and again. The reason for this is that the MPlayer is being restarted and Windows itself found it incompatible with Aero. This can be turned off by checking the “Disable Desktop Composition” checkbox on the second tab of the shortcuts properties page.
There are still some rough edges that need to be rasped away in the next versions, then I’ll release an update.
AVG says it is a AutoIt virus. Any advice please?
It’s coded with AutoIt script, which sometimes generates false positives. Try another scanner or something like http://www.virustotal.com/.
Hello,
Nice program, but, I am trying to “catalog”
(make contact sheets) some CDs and DVD discs containing video clips on them, I have set the program, defined a special folder where to store the created images, but got nothing!
It is working only when the clip is on the computer’s harddisk only.
Have I overlooked something ? or is it a bug?
Installation was clean
Will appreciate some answers.
Thanks
Mordechai
It ‘should’ work, so I fear its a bug :). Will check and come back to you.
Not truly a bug, but a ‘feature’ that backfired … give release 1.0.7.1 a try.
Cheers
Thanks for all the effort put on this project; I hope this works in this end. Real much appreciated, thinking of donating!
Thanks for the feedback! Nice to know that my work is appreciated :).
